Panel: Bridging the gap in a sea of data

Can you provide an overview of your session? Why is this an important topic to discuss?

Where does it make sense, and what role does analytics play in developing effective solutions in the cold chain that can be leveraged to optimize existing, or develop new value streams that offer tangible benefits into an already complex operational eco-system.

What has been the biggest challenge to your business in 2019?

The adoption of telematics and the subsequent advantages require to an extent a paradigm shift in operational and business processes for
a market that is tightly bound to very specific, complex and at times, legacy processes. Although many recognize the need to adopt data driven solutions into their business the challenge of evolutionary or disruptive change makes many wary of the risk of adoption in a culture that still largely remains risk adverse.

What are the most common teething problems with using smart containers?

Changing business processes to achieve the return, meaning that at times a big bang approach is not necessarily the best starting
solution, particularly when the goals are not clear and shared across different involved departments, goals that in some cases could potentially even be in conflict. Recognizing the advantages of starting small with a targeted trade lane and using this to drive learning and change in the organisation before transitioning into larger scale adoption can be beneficial.

How can we streamline operations with the use of IoT technology?

Operations are in many cases already digitized, but the reality and virtual representation are not always in sync, particularly where IT systems rely on manual input. By automating the data acquisition, this source of error is removed. Then we can focus on further optimization of processes such as reducing container dwell times.

How can IoT technology be used to ensure transparency at all points of the supply chain?

There is a trend towards integration of the different IT systems to avoid a user having to look at multiple platforms. This drives API integration between participants in the market, allowing instantaneous information flow into the right place. Blockchain can extend this to provide an immutable record of transactions.

Why do you think events like Intermodal Europe are important for the industry?

Intermodal Europe remains the leading industry forum to bring together all the key industry stakeholders and thought leaders at the same table, creating not only networking opportunities, but the opportunity to share challenges and achievements with an eye towards how we as an arguably unique industry continue to challenge ourselves and progress.
